The Building

Fairly unassuming as far as store exteriors go. It's nestled on a corner just outside the heart of Bavan, where it's busy but not so busy the store gets overwhelmed. The inside is also fairly typical for a konbini (japanese convenience store) with just enough coolers to store the various drinks, snacks, and bento that need it.

IMPORTANT NOTES:
» The store magically restocks itself once an item is removed from the shelf. Therefore, it'll never be out of anything except local magazines and goods.
» Local magazines and goods are the only things that do not get magically restocked. People come in every day to refresh magazines, newspapers, and local goods that Komaeda wants to promote.
» The music in the store is a bunch of Jpop idol songs that Makoto Kikuchi had collected.

Products

8/12 is intended to be a mostly one-stop shop, much like the convenience stores in Japan. Therefore, you can find a number of things:

» Magazines and newspapers.
» Need a business shirt and tie? They've got you.
» Modern personal care items.
» Batteries, cheap flashlights, nonprescription medicines, etc.
» Common (Japanese) cooking supplies? Yep. This includes things like various sauces, curry blocks, small bags of rice, miso, etc.
» Snacks. From furikake to mix with your rice to seaweed to varying kinds of salty and sweet bags of snacks to jerky, they've got it. This includes candy, of course, including many Japanese types of candy.
» Instant noodles. All those popular instant noodles you missed from home? Yeah, they're here now.
» Onigiri and sandwiches. Salmon stuffed onigiri? Amazing. Strawberry shortcake sandwich? Hell yeah. There are a lot of varying combos to choose from, both sweet and savory.
» Bento. This could go on forever, but the gist is that it often contains varying combos of omelette, meat, pickled vegetables, rice, sauces, etc. Sushi can also be found, along with bowls of ramen, udon, or yakisoba! Among other Japanese dishes.
» There's also a place to buy things like plain hardboiled eggs, plain chicken breasts, tofu, etc. A great place to pick up a quick cheap cooking material that you need.
» Drinks! The drinks tend to be of a Japanese variety, with loads of soda, coffee, tea, sports drinks, juice, and water. It's also possible to find some of those weirder flavors like cucumber and sakura. You can get them from the drink cooler, or in the case of some sodas and juices, from a drink machine.
» You can also get alcohol, mostly Japanese varieties. Did you miss having that sake?
» By the cashier, there's a buffet type table laid out where you can pick and choose what to put in your oden, should you choose to get some.
» Also found by the cashier is a case full of a few flavors of Japanese fried chicken. Heck yeah.

Services

While the services aren't the same as they would be in Japan, Komaeda's made sure to maintain the deals Makoto began with local companies in order to be able to offer something similar:

» Package mailing. All you have to do is drop it off and 8/12 will make sure it gets to where it needs to go!
» Bill pay. You can pay your bills here and 8/12 will make sure to get them to the appropriate building. The employees will make runs daily to make sure that whatever comes in goes out to where it needs to be.
» Ticket purchasing. While limited because of the lack of technology, 8/12 carries a limited number of tickets for local shows if you're not able to make it to the box office.
» Lottery tickets. Yes, you can get your lottery fix here if you want. Get it, guys.

General Preferences

Overall playstyle I generally play Komaeda either from Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair (Chapter 5) or from the end of Danganronpa 3: Hope Arc. Because of this, his knowledge of the events within the series can vary, but realistically I can play him from any canon point, these are just my preferred spots. I take his characterization from the games, anime, and the manga; I can adjust my plays for AUs, PSLs, and what-if timelines. I also play Komaeda with a heavy emphasis on real portayal of his mental health, even though Kodaka kind of overlooks this in the games.

In-game Slowburn, slowburn, slowburn. Friends to lovers. Enemies to friends to lovers. Unrequited love and pseudo-unrequited love are big themes for Komaeda. He is less likely to look at people romantically in games, and I am much less likely to pursue this since my focus is usually on character growth.

PSLs While I enjoy slowburn to some degree, just because that's the nature of his character, I am less committed to the idea of it since there wouldn't be much more happening. While I have never done any PSLs for Komaeda, there are a few I am interested in! Namely, life on Jabberwock island after everyone exited the simulation.

Favorite ship dynamics Mutual growth. The protector and protectee. Codependence and miscommunication. Survivors of trauma opening up to each other, and learning to trust again. Seemingly unrequited pinning. Found families and, of course, hurt/comfort.

Personality:

Beliefs

To understand Komaeda, you must first understand his beliefs. Komaeda has a twisted obsession with hope—but for the sake of understanding, we will regard hope as “will”.

He claims to believe that hope is absolute good, and that anything done in the name of this absolute good, is inherently good in itself. His willfulness to do whatever it takes to ensure what he believes is a bright future, is something that Komaeda will frequently take to the absolute extreme. While Komaeda may not necessarily be willing to perform just any horrendous act himself, he genuinely believes that things like terrorism, torture, and murder can be excusable if they are in the name of absolute good; because of this, he doesn’t feel guilt if he does hurt others, nor does he express grief for those classmates of his that are murdered.

So twisted is Komaeda’s belief, that even when his classmates are killed, he will intentionally stall out murder trials by bringing up seemingly irrelevant information. By doing this, Komaeda not only displays his specific brand of manipulation (intentionally confusing his classmates), but he will also be actively helping both sides of the trial. His greatest desire is to see two “wills” pitted against one another, purely to see whose “will” is stronger, and who will reign as the harbinger absolute good. In order to do this, Komaeda will also withhold information, especially when he is calculating enough to have figured out who exactly the murderer in each trial is, long before the rest of his classmates.

Due to his selfish desire, others often mistrust Komaeda, simply because they can never fully understand why he does the things he does; but to Komaeda, the answer is a simple and logical one. Any deed done in the name of one’s strong will (hope), is a righteous one. For this, Komaeda is very much against those who commit heinous acts simply for the shock of them. As twisted and blind as his ideals are, unless the end goal is to further spread absolute good, Komaeda condemns acts of cruelty. In reality, Komaeda doesn’t want to hurt others, he simply understands that sometimes the ends justify the means.

Beyond the extremes of Komaeda’s beliefs, he also correlates willfulness with the inherent talent within others. To him, those who were born great, with high capability and aptitude (regardless of where those skills lie), are people who will no doubt further his idea of absolute good. Despite being an “Ultimate” talent holder himself, Komaeda does not consider his supernatural luck to be something that brings hope, unlike the talents of his classmates; because of this, Komaeda is more than happy to be sacrificed in order to further the goals of his classmates. His obsessive beliefs intermingle with his self-deprecating nature, and where his fellow classmates all seem to reject the reverence he shows them, time and again Komaeda will throw himself onto the proverbial pyre just to feel like he is of use to them.

Between his earnest, self-sacrificing nature, and his obsessive zeal, Komaeda is more often than not, avoided—but even that doesn’t sway him from pushing his ideals onto others.

Behavior

When you first meet Komaeda, what you would see is nothing short of a polite, friendly, calm, if not somewhat insecure young man. He always seems to be smiling brightly, and laughing easily at the things that happen around him; but while he is friendly with everyone, Komaeda oftentimes lacks tact, and will say awkward, strange, or unsettling things with a smile. Because of his tendency to accidentally insult, or make others uncomfortable with the light-hearted delivery of his darker commentary, most people tend to avoid him. So despite his obvious carefree attitude, Komaeda claims himself to be a rather gloomy person. His gloominess, though, only seems to manifest in the way he self-deprecates constantly—even if those words of self-hate are delivered with a light-hearted smile.

Komaeda’s insecurity stems from his reverence for talent, and with it, his belief that his own intangible luck shouldn’t qualify as one. When he enters Hope’s Peak Academy, Komaeda will often speak to others in ways where he puts himself down, purely because he thinks he’s undeserving of standing beside fellow ultimate talent users.

Not only that, but due to his social awkwardness, whenever Komaeda experiences a confusing social situation or misses social cues, he’s prone to self-deprecating rhetoric. An example of this is during the first murder trial, when Mikan says Komaeda looked “clean” (because he wasn’t covered in blood) and he takes it as a compliment, even saying “even my own mother never complimented me!”. This example is just one of many, where Komaeda will interject his own self-hatred into conversation, regardless of how true it may be.

Despite his opinion of his own talent, he is able to remain optimistic even in the most disparaging of situations because of his luck. For Komaeda, his entire life has been determined purely by the supernatural luck he possesses. Bad events, determined as “bad luck” were always followed by good events, or “good luck,” that were equivalent to the trauma he experienced. When the plane he had been riding was hijacked, a meteorite pierced the ceiling and killed the hijackers—but also his parents—which left him both orphaned, and with an exorbitant inheritance, as well as his freedom. Just as well, when he was kidnapped in middle school by a would-be murderer for ransom, he found a winning lottery ticket in the trash bag he had been stuffed in, resulting in winning a $300 million grand prize. By living with this constant cycle of luck, Komaeda remains laid-back and carefree about any bad experience he may have to endure, as he always believes good luck will be right around the corner.

Overall though, there exists a disconnect between Komaeda's feelings and his actions. He exists almost as if he is a “will” detached from a person. He tries to be polite, but he can come off as harsh or insensitive of others’ feelings, and often becomes genuinely confused when he upsets others. He lacks social awareness and tact, and because of this, he often doesn’t fully understand how his behavior affects others, nor is he able to pick up on social cues. Komaeda will mistake others’ insults for compliments, and similarly, he will compliment others in a way that may seem to be more like an insult. When the killings begin, Komaeda expresses confusion for why everyone is so paranoid, angry, or afraid of him. Rather than coming to understand the views of others, Komaeda will simply turn these feelings of confusion inward, and self-deprecate instead.

This post contains spoilers for Nagito Komaeda, as well as for the Danganronpa series as a whole. All triggering subjects will be properly warned for in his tags.

☆ PTSD: Komaeda has a lot of trauma from both before and during the killing game, and though he's apathetic to most of it, it will still come up rather frequently. His triggers are airplanes, enclosed spaces, and serial killers.

☆ Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder: A byproduct of his trauma revolving around his karmic luck, Komaeda has a penchant of going to extremes in order to sway his supernatural talent. As such, he compulsively commits acts of despair as a means of achieving the hope he believes will follow.

☆ Behavioral Variant Frontotemporal Dementia (early stage): Diagnosed in middle school, Komaeda's dementia has no record of memory loss associated with it, but it does hinder his social skills considerably. He can be apathetic in the midst of terrible situations, he often will not understand social cues nor boundaries, and he has a difficult time forming deep, lasting bonds with others.

☆ Cancer (stage 3 lymphoma): Diagnosed at the same time as his dementia.

☆ Terrorism: Even before joining Ultimate Despair, Komaeda enacted terrorism due to his stringent belief in hope versus despair, as well as his reliance on his Ultimate Luck which always worked in extremes. Though he engaged in many acts of terrorism as a Despair, his earliest instance was during his high school years.

☆ Desecration of a corpse/self-mutilation: When Junko Enoshima died, Komaeda believed he could harbor a piece of her despair within himself, and use it to become the Ultimate Hope. By this belief, he not only cut off her corpse's arm, but his own—attaching the dead limb to himself to perpetuate Junko's influence.

☆ Brainwashing/forced memory loss: In order to erase the brainwashing Junko Enoshima had caused them, the Future Foundation placed Komaeda and his classmates within the Neo World Program: a rehabilitation program that erased their despair-filled memories in an attempt to replace them with normal ones.

☆ Kidnapping: In middle school, Komaeda was kidnapped and held hostage for ransom by a serial killer. During this event, he was confined within a small, sealed garbage bag, until authorities managed to find him.

☆ Dehumanization/slavery: Though self-imposed during his Despair days, Komaeda was once the slave to the Warriors of Hope, a group of adult-hating children who emotionally and physically abused him constantly.

☆ Attempted murder: As a participant in the Killing Game, Komaeda was constantly exposed to the threat of murder for an extended period of time. During this, he had also planned and attempted the murder of his classmate.

☆ Emotional abuse/manipulation: Not only is Komaeda a victim of emotional abuse and manipulation at the hands of Junko Enoshima, but he has used gaslighting, negging, and various forms of verbal abuse to manipulate others.

☆ Self-harm: Komaeda has a habit of committing emotional self-harm through forced isolation, but has gone to the extreme with physical self-torture, as well.

☆ Assisted suicide: Komaeda dies within the killing game via an elaborate suicide plan, in which he uses his Ultimate Luck to force an unknowing party to deal the finishing blow to him.
