TALENT Super High School Level Lucky Student

DISLIKES Flying, enclosed spaces, depictions of serial killers, noisy places, crude and ugly people
Personality
GENERAL BEHAVIOR
Komaeda has a laid-back and calm demeanor, often seen smiling or laughing—however, his cheerfulness is not entirely genuine, his carefree nature more akin to apathy—as he tends to feel, as well as express, extreme self-hatred. Still, he remains cheerful even during his self-deprecating, acting in a way that's disturbingly optimistic even towards horrible things such as death, just as long as it's for the sake of hope.

He suppresses his real feelings of sorrow or fear as a coping mechanism, because Komaeda often experiences tragedy due to his luck. He has witnessed countless strange and unlikely events due to his luck, which is why he's not easily surprised. As a result of everything he's been through, Komaeda has become emotionally numb, and is rarely openly angry or scared. He often lacks the appropriate emotions in situations where most people would be afraid, such as being under the threat of violence. Even so, he says that he feels fear every day of his life because of his luck. Furthermore, he is easily angered by despair and other things he considers insulting towards hope. When he expresses his anger, he is notably more serious—and when he's displeased, he's even passive-aggressive.

Komaeda is capable of feeling some guilt as well as care for others, and while he does not truly enjoy seeing others suffer, he enjoys the hope that is born from it. Still, he is typically very emotionally cold and doesn't seem to feel much remorse, or even grief. He's shown to be fine with tricking, manipulating, and stealing; though it should be noted that he only does these acts for the sake of a bigger goal, rather than for his own selfishness. Surprisingly, Komaeda is a very honest person, but even then he is not opposed to lying if he finds it necessary. While he prefers to do things on his own, he expresses loneliness and often tries to join others in their activities—becoming extremely happy if he's given even just the slightest bit of attention. Otherwise, he intentionally keeps his distance from others, because he wants to protect them from the disasters caused by his bad luck.

Komaeda is one of the most cunning people in his class, often solving a case long before the others, though he never seeks credit for it. Instead, he will act ignorant during trials, manipulating the conversation by giving (often unnoticed) hints, and then praise the others as if they're the ones who figured it all out. He does this because he considers himself too unimportant to take a more openly active role, and wants to see the other Ultimates figure things out by themselves. This is, though, for the sake of his obsession, as Komaeda wishes to remain neutral so that he can determine who has the stronger hope.
Appearance
HEIGHT 180cm (5'11")
WEIGHT 65kg (143lbs)
HAIR Off-white
EYES Gray-green
Komaeda is a tall, slim young man with notably wide shoulders. He has a sensitive complexion with pallid, sickly-looking skin, gray-green eyes and thick lashes. His hair is shoulder-length, naturally wavy, and of an unnaturally off-white color that is ascribed to that of a spirit.

His signature piece is a knee-length, dark green coat with a jagged-cut tail. It has a red square pattern across the right shoulder, and a large, square-shaped '55' on the back. Underneath, he wears a loose, white scoop-neck T-shirt with a red design on the front, resembling two interlocking hooks. He wears fitted plain black jeans, a wallet chain with a skull charm, and pale brown shoes — each fastened by two zippers.

Despite his unique appearance, or perhaps because of it, he has also been described as very beautiful. Often, when his male classmates consider the "likeability" of their female counterparts, Komaeda is included with the girls. (Official art)
Past Events
PRE-TRAGEDY
Komaeda was born into a rich family, on the 28th day of the 4th month, with his birth month representing bad luck and death while his birthday represents a double amount of wealth and fortune according to old Japanese and Chinese beliefs. He was born with an extraordinary type of luck, and as a result, his life has always been shaped around moments of extremely good luck and extremely bad luck.

When he was only an elementary school student, Komaeda and his parents went on a family vacation at San Cristóbal Island in the Galápagos archipelago. When the vacation was at an end, the family boarded an airplane leaving from the San Cristóbal Airport. However, the plane ended up being hijacked. Both the hijacker and Komaeda's parents were killed in front of him after a small meteor crashed into the airplane, leaving him to inherit all of his parents' fortune and become free to do whatever he wished, as he had no other living relatives.

After his parents' death, during middle school, Komaeda was kidnapped by a serial killer; he was released after the police found him (it was implied that the killer let him go after they found out nobody would pay the ransom). As a form of good luck, Komaeda had discovered a lottery ticket in the garbage bag the murderer kidnapped him in: a winning ticket for 300 million yen.

These would be the first of many, many tragic things that happened to Komaeda due to his luck. His cycle of good and bad luck made sure that any chance he might have at actual happiness would be spoiled. In order to cope with this, he developed a strong faith in hope so that he could find some meaning in his life. However, this turned into an unhealthy obsession. He didn't have any close friends or even acquaintances, as other people were disturbed by his strange way of thinking and he intentionally avoided other people in order to protect them from his bad luck. His bad luck caused the deaths of several people and he started to believe that only the people with "weak hope" could be killed by the influence of someone worthless like him. His luck cycle wore him down to the point of drifting through life without purpose, waiting to die and dreaming of becoming a stepping stone for the world's hope. Believing that he is unable to embody hope, he idolized Hope's Peak Academy and its' students as symbols of hope who are capable of creating "absolute hope" - hope that can overcome any despair.
