Finally, when he comes to his own conclusion, a smile splits across his face once more—radiant, despite how apologetic he seems.]
Everyone seemed normal when they saw me... Maybe it accidentally happened when I saw you? But I wasn't intending for you to be stunned still, Atem-kun, I promise. I was just excited to see you!
[It's been awhile, after all. What with the events that had happened two weeks prior, he knew that Atem was likely busy making sure Ryou was okay.]
Maybe if I think about something else it'll go away, hmhmhm... [He's thinking again, his brows furrowed,] oh! On my walk to 8/12, I saw someone walking their dog! He was really big and fluffy... He looked so soft, I almost asked to pet him, but I didn't want to scare them.
[Looks like his halo is returning to that soft yellow while thinking about that puppy—]
no subject
...and it reminds Atem that he has other things he wants to ask, besides "please stop stunning me."]
...are you doing okay with the monster type so far...? I know it's early, but it was a difficult one for me...
[He's told that story already, about how being a neph made him feel and led him to act. Not even he should have a dog, whatever dog he wants can distract Atem entirely from the sense of dread he associates with the monster type.]
no subject
Well, I chose this because Nanami-san seemed like she wanted to see me as one... So, I hadn't really thought about how they can fly. It feels a bit useless having these wings on my back, since I'm a little apprehensive to get in the air.
[But other than that?]
I don't think there's anything I really dislike about this, yet... nothing upsetting, at least! I do miss being more resistant to the cold, especially since I can't really wear a normal sweater with these wings.
[Komaeda turns then, just slightly, and unfurls one of his wings to show off... His open-backed turtleneck! Is it practical? Who can say!]
no subject
[Atem, luckily, is not a pervert under most circumstances and he is erring on the side of "the flash of back isn't for my benefit, therefore I'm going to be normal about it." It's a cute look, true, but it's Komaeda's face that's his captivating feature right now.]
I'd lend you some of my clothes that are made to go around wings, but I don't think they'd fit...
[It's good to hear nothing too bad emotionally has hit. It's still early, true, and Komaeda might just have not seen anything yet that awakens the burning, electric fury that rests in the heart of the monster type, but...nothing yet.]
no subject
Still, the offer of nephilim-friendly clothing is something he appreciates, and that appreciation radiates through his features with fondness coloring his expression. He hunches forward, too—not because of height differences but because resting on his haunches is more comfortable than craning his spine for an indefinite amount of time.]
It's alright, I'm going to be meeting up with Fugo-kun this weekend to go shopping! He's going to help me pick out some clothes that will be easy to alter...
[Hm. They're just standing here, but Komaeda is suddenly reminded of something.]
Atem-kun, you can shift into other monsters right? I actually have a favor to ask...
no subject
[Just confirming what Nagito understands about his priest power and keeping his eye contact from being too intense as Komaeda drops closer to his own eye level, that's all. He does his best not to think about proximity. They have to stay friends, for Ryou's sake. But staying friends was a lot easier when his attraction to Komaeda felt like a game of Russian roulette, where anything might happen, and though it was thrilling, it was anything but safe.
And when his face always stayed the same.
(He might need to have a word with Nanami.)
It's really different between them...it's not the same as they were before. It's something that makes Atem terribly, powerfully glad, so glad he feels like his heart's going to burst. It's like he was trying to see Komaeda in almost total darkness before, staining his eyes, making do with outlines and the impression of movement, and they kept bumping into each other in the dim light.
Atem's the one who's asked for and insisted on friendship, but now that things have changed, it's his turn to sit with discontent about the situation, even though he's gotten everything he wanted before.
Damn it.
Well, he has no plans to refuse this request, whatever it is. He doubts Komaeda would ask in earnest for anything outside of the considerable range of things Atem is willing to give or do, and certainly not without a good reason worth hearing out. He's listening.]
no subject
But when he thinks about facing a fear he's always had and who he'd most trust with the burden of alleviating that, the list of people is incredibly short. Nanami and Hinata aren't monsters who can fly, but regardless of being a vampire who can turn into a bat, Komaeda knows that Atem has been at least one winged monster—though he would never ask the guy to become a nephil, again.]
Well, I... I'm scared of flying, but I'd like to get over that fear. I know that you know how to fly, Atem-kun, so... I was wondering if you would help me?
[His smile goes sheepish, as he suddenly feels like maybe this might be asking for too much. What if Atem does refuse? The uncertainty twists his stomach into knots, so he adds on:]
You don't have to, if you're too busy, though! I know that you've probably got your own plans and things... I'll be like this for the month, so...
no subject
-- when Komaeda backpedals, offering him an out, a "sorry, I'm too busy, but I'm sure you'll get the hang of it soon!" that he could say, if he doesn't want to do this.
Atem doesn't say it.]
No...it's okay! I do know how to fly...and you should learn, too, as soon as you can. You never know when it might be important...
[But that's the utilitarian reason. Atem needs to do less of that, and more listening to how he feels.]
It should be less scary with someone else around, and I'd be glad to do what I can to help. I'm not too busy at all!
no subject
Really...? That's wonderful! If you want to do it now, I'll just need to put my groceries away...
[His tail is wagging a bit too, oops. Komaeda turns to look over his shoulder, towards his own apartment door.]
Mmm... meet me on the roof, maybe? Ah— would it be better to meet after sundown...?
[He's not aware of how sun-proof a the vampbat is, since he's assuming that's how the lessons will be done.]
no subject
[Atem lets out a little heh! and closes one eye in a wink.]
If you're nervous about flying, jumping off the roof isn't the best way to start at all!
[Take it from him, and how he had to dive after manticore-Ryou. It's gutsy of Komaeda to think about the roof, but really...Atem doesn't want him to be hurt or frightened, or to give this room to go wrong with a bad fall.]
It's cloudy today, so it should be all right...we can meet on top of the hill in the park.
[In Ryslig, the locations are made up and the geography doesn't matter! We're making up a nearby park with a steep hill!
He is a vampire, and he does hear Komaeda's heart going a mile a minute. It is a distraction he absolutely has to tune out. Atem is treading water, being hit with he's cute when he's bashful and his tail wags? already -- all thoughts about the rush of blood under Komaeda's skin and if it'd taste different than it did as a merperson must be stifled so that he can keep having this conversation normally.]
no subject
That's probably a better idea... I just figured if I was falling, you would catch me.
[There's unabashed honesty there, that reaches even his eyes with his smile as he slowly pulls himself back up to mostly-hunched standing. He still needs to get these groceries inside... There's a bunch of ingredients for making homemade chocolate that he doesn't want anyone to notice quite yet, though Atem won't get to enjoy his until early March, when he wakes up.]
I'll meet you there, alright?
[Komaeda offers playfully before he turns and leaves for his apartment door, though it takes a few tries to fish his apartment key from his pocket, before he manages to open it.]
no subject
Yes, obviously he would catch Komaeda if he was falling, but that's not the purpose of the exercise, and even if it would be more exciting...
...being mindful of Komaeda's flying fears matters more than getting to catch him, or setting up a trust fall.
Atem simply gives a nod -- to both statements -- and when Komaeda is safely out of sight and the door to apartment 807 is closed, he takes a second to slump against the wall of 806 and let out a long breath. Atem scrubs his face with his hands -- he has got to get a better hold on himself. Things with Komaeda have to stay like this for the foreseeable future, so he's got to get used to warm smiles and racing heartbeats and the understanding that they would catch each other if they fell.
He just has to get used to it, he thinks, putting a hand above his own heart. Atem is happy about these developments, they're in a good place, better than ever -- it'll be okay. He has a lot to be happy about.
It's okay if things stay like this...
Straightening, Atem heads for the stairs that lead to the roof, stepping out into the cold gray February light. The cloud cover is thick and not likely to clear, so it's only a little uncomfortable being outside. On the roof, Atem's body changes, fingertips first, blue claws emerging from a swirl of fog. He kicks his shoes off to be retrieved later, not needed on his hooves, and launches himself off the edge with a jump and a flap of batlike demon-wings.
A blue demon will be waiting for Komaeda, sprawled carelessly on the grass at the top of the hill, idly rolling a solar back and forth on its edge along his spade-tipped tail. His eyes are on the sky, watching the lowest layer of the clouds scudding by, and everything about his posture from the slump on his elbows to the much less precise way he holds the yellow-gold wings at his ears is relaxed. It's impossible to mistake him for anyone else, though -- the hair's always the same, and so are the red irises. This is definitely Atem.]
no subject
It's nice, at least, that they're able to find the middle ground between their respective needs. He had offered to do this after sundown, but he knows it'd be bad if it got too dark to be outside. Komaeda wonders if it's also a byproduct of being a priest, that Atem is able to stand being outside as a vampire, even with just a bit of cloud cover. It's that thought he lingers on, as he approaches the hill in the park, that makes it so that, when noticing the demon, his mind needs a moment to catch up.
Who's this demon? Wasn't Atem supposed to be—ah.]
You changed! [Komaeda laughs, as if the guy before him put on a different outfit, rather than using his power to completely alter his anatomy.] I didn't know you were a demon before... I missed so much while I was gone. [His tone tinges, only a bit, with a melancholy that's just as quickly cast aside as he approaches Atem and settles down onto the grass beside him.]
What's it like, being one?
no subject
I like it. It's a really strong monster with a lot of useful abilities...I don't worry as much when I'm a demon. Anything that happens, I'll probably be able to handle...
[He trails off contentedly. As a demon, nothing feels so important or so urgent that he can't take a break, to do what he wants to do...
Atem tilts his face up toward the gray, dreary sky, only a little lighter than the Fog cloak rolling down his shoulders and disappearing in wisps over the grass.]
It feels like I can do whatever I want, and it'll work out. The only problem is the weakness...salt is even easier to find than silver!
no subject
He's glad that Atem seems to like being a demon, strength and magic aside—because as Komaeda watches Atem sprawl indolently in the grass, he can't help but think about how much more comfortable he looks. It makes him happy to see Atem finally relaxing. That satisfaction shows even in his smile as he tilts his head and takes in the sight of the other from horns to hooves.]
Hm... the fact that you can't enjoy a salty snack is pretty troublesome... but if that's the worst of it, then it might not be so bad.
[How nice must it be to not have to worry. To be able to enjoy yourself and have cool powers... Komaeda, just at the beginning of his nephilim temp, will have to tuck that thought back into the recesses of his mind for later.]
Though... it's kind of funny that you're a demon while I'm an angel, now. Like that saying of "opposites attract"? [Komaeda laughs,] here's hoping I don't accidentally hit you with holy magic!
no subject
He gives an easy one-shouldered shrug at the inherent danger of their opposing monster types. Even if there is an unfortunate magic mishap, the fog's coming in soon, they'll heal, he's not concerned at all. What's funnier to Atem, personally, is a different aspect. Namely:]
It is funny. If opposites attract, and we're a devil-and-angel pair, then that means I might end up getting you into trouble. You're not worried I'll be a corrupting influence, are you?
[Oh no, how terrible would that be, is the tease in his tone, as his tail sways playfully, winding and unwinding around the solar. Atem has no concrete plans to do anything terrible (and frankly that sounds a lot like work), but it's fun to not worry so much about right. Atem can fill the space he's in, be himself and all of himself without worrying whether it's the right self, the correct move, the proper action. He's free to be just him, and whatever shape that takes is the right one.
Right now that shape involves playful what-ifs, an I-see-you-looking! call out shift in body language, and no shame at all about either. All he wants to do as a demon is play, and any openings like "it's like how they say opposites attract" will be exploited.]
no subject
Komaeda laughs, but the sound of it is awkward, one that he swallows around—and suddenly he's averting his gaze to the grass, rather than meeting those intense, red eyes. It's the middle of winter, but he suddenly feels much too warm. Oh, right, that's just the blush that's coloring his face, down to his shoulders.]
I'd happily let you corrupt me, Atem-kun.
[It may be a flirtatious response, but it's earnest in every way. Still, he feels like this situation is probably too tempting. Komaeda quickly tucks a piece of his hair back behind an ear-wing and pushes himself up to standing again. They came here with a purpose!!! Time to stop flirting, because he knows they can't do anything about it, and time to start flying!
Komaeda clears his throat, and unfurls his white and black wings from his back.]
Are you ready to teach me how to fly?
no subject
Komaeda blinked first.
The only way to lose would have been to shy away himself, to cut himself off from an interaction he wanted to have out of some misplaced sense of responsibility for someone other than himself. Ha.
So it's with a peal of laughter that's both wicked and delighted (he meant that! He meant it, "I'd let you corrupt me!" Actually getting to know Komaeda is so great, he's so weird and interesting and fun, and Atem wants to have that, experience that, so much, but not now) that Atem pushes himself to his hooves, standing up and unfurling his own wings, flicking the solar from his tail to his hand and pocketing it.]
Yep!
[Time to switch gears from flirting to flight: Atem does want Komaeda to learn to fly, and he wants the satisfaction of having been the one to teach him. Atem rolls his shoulders out, then plants his feet in the grass, his wings and tail shifting to balance him against the wind.]
The best way to get a feel for how to fly is by running downhill with your wings out. I can't explain how to hold your wings, or how often to flap them...all monsters are different! Even as a nephilim, flying felt different than as a demon or a bat...but as you run, you'll feel the air catch under you. When you have the angle right, you'll start to feel light...your feet will come off the ground, and then, you're gliding!
Want me to show you first, or just give it a try yourself?
no subject
The type of games he's used to playing with Atem are more akin to knife threats and playful insults. It's the challenge that comes with proving who can stand at the top between them—but this Atem, without his limiters and his sense of selflessness to stop him, really did just lean forward and lower his voice, with words of corruption on his tongue.
As the demon walks past him, Komaeda is barely paying attention to the words he says. Instead, his gaze is drawn back to the line of his strong shoulders, as his wings unfurl. This might have been a mistake. His heart is beating so hard it feels like it might burst from his chest. His sickly complexion, returned as a nephil, has gone so flush with color, it almost looks as if he's having heatstroke in the middle of winter.
He has to pull himself together. There isn't anything he can do about these feelings in his chest, but more than that, he doesn't want to squander the limited time he has with Atem, before the guy returns to being his usual, dutiful self. The flying is a good distraction, actually.]
I'll go first... That way you can watch my form, I guess...
[He guesses, because he'd rather not continue to gawk at Atem and imagine what-if scenarios that won't come true. So instead he steps forward, wings unfurling from his back and smoothing out from their ruffled, heat conserving state. He just has to run and the wind will catch them, right...?
Without thinking any more about it, and perhaps prompted by wanting to (
run away from his gay thoughts) distract himself, Komaeda takes off running the best he can. Which in and of itself... isn't great. The sudden growth spurt has left his gait looking more like an awkward, galloping fawn, but he manages not to fall at the very least—He can feel the wind beneath his wings, just enough to feel like it might catch him, just enough to feel like he wants to lean into it and... At the very last stretch of the hill, he lifts off of the ground—only by a few feet—where his wings will flap a bit erratically, before he touches back down at the bottom.]
no subject
Despite these feelings, he watches Komaeda stumble down the hill with distinct amusement -- a giant angel stumbling like that is pretty funny! But, when Komaeda gets it right at the end, the demon hops back up to his feet and lets out a whoop and a holler of excitement.]
That's it! You got it at the very end!
[Atem's hands are cupped around his mouth as he shouts to the bottom of the hill.]
Come back up and try it again!
no subject
He starts his climb back up the hill, taking it slow and steady on those stilts for legs, and panting all the way. Once at the top beside Atem again, he needs a moment where he's bent forward, hands on his knees, to catch his breath.]
Geeze... I never knew this would be such a work out...
[Is it too early to say he misses being a fish? At least as a merperson in the water, the vessel you move through suspends your weight. Never mind that he never would've thought of himself as out of shape, but... Maybe he really should swim more often, to build up his stamina too.]
Alright, [Komaeda takes a breath after resting and pulls himself back up,] let's go again...!
[And again, he runs down the hill with his wings spread wide, letting his body lean forward into the wind, letting his momentum carry him into an angle that catches, half-way down the hill this time, and lets him glide through the air much higher than before...
...Which is where a sense of accomplishment is quickly replaced, as memories of hurdling through the air root fear in the pit of his stomach. Where he'd managed to flap his wings before, now he begins to flap his arms instead—he'll need to right himself if he doesn't want to crash into the ground.]
no subject
But he's a little too slow to do it, and off Komaeda goes again. (It's just as well.)
He's not slow, however, to spot that Komaeda is struggling and in trouble, and with a leap downhill of his own, Atem's airborne in an instant.]
Nagito!!
[The difference in their relative sizes is a good thing -- it means it's not impossible for Atem to get above and behind Komaeda's falling form, get hands aroind his waist with claws that prick through clothing, and with a great wing-beat, slow Komaeda's fall and bring him back midair to a position he can fly in.]
Spread your wings out! [he shouts over the rush of wind.] The air will catch you!
[Atem's bat-wings beat again, making sure they still have enough forward movement to support flight. Touching Komaeda is uncomfortable, and not really in the fun way -- they're opposing monster types, and the holy magic Komaeda is made of, the magic that collapses in on itself in darkness, has his palms tingling. But Atem doesn't let go, and won't let this end in an uncontrolled fall.
If Komaeda doesn't get his wings right, they'll tumble harmlessly in a heap into a patch of grass, no harm done.]
no subject
But then something else happens—the prick of Atem's claws at his sides is just different enough, just painful enough, to pull him back from the precipice of his fear. Not only that, but the great beat of his wings has made it so that he's no longer dropping rapidly. For a split moment, it feels like he's floating—and that's just enough to push the fear back into a corner of his mind and do as he's told.
Komaeda spreads his wings, and sure enough, the wind catches beneath them.
He manages, just barely and with the assistance of Atem, to make a not-so-crash landing. The second his feet meet the grass, Komaeda stumbles forward a few steps before catching himself. It's, at the very least, better than completely crumpling to the ground—but when he turns to face Atem, it's clear how shaken he is. His eyes have gone wide with panic, and his mouth, straining to form a placating smile, is completely failing. He can hardly hear how hard he's panting, over the rush of his pulse in his ears.]
H-Haha... Sorry... [The apology leaves him without a thought, though whether he means for worrying Atem, or something else, it's hard to tell.] I think I bit off more than I can chew with that one... I didn't expect to go that high so soon.
no subject
He reaches for Komaeda's hand. Prickling or no, getting a grip on it matters more -- he's going to wrap his fingers around Komaeda's hand, pressing their palms together, hard. It's something else to focus on, something grounding -- and, more selfishly, Atem wants to hold Komaeda's hand right now. How could he not, with that look on Komaeda's face? He's trying to be brave, but...]
You did fine.
[A squeeze of their hands.]
Even though you were scared, you caught yourself, and you landed without getting hurt. That's what's important.
[He's not in any rush to push Komaeda into another attempt; his body language is relaxed, his hooves planted in the ground where he is. Komaeda can take his time; he's attempting something really hard for him.]
If you had gotten it right away, I would have been really surprised!
no subject
Komaeda is used to Atem feeling lukewarm at best, but now, the palm that slots with his own is noticeably warmer than normal body temperature, though not to the degree of being uncomfortable. The worst part of it, is that if feels like permission. When he looks down at Atem, it's with a realization that he isn't fully panicking yet—and though he doesn't feel as though he'll start crying, he wants more of this comfort.]
Hey, Atem-kun... Can I ask for another favor?
[Where their hands meet, he gives a slightly weaker squeeze back, as he meets Atem's gaze. His own expression, so easily read now without having such rigid facial structure, shows his thoughts plainly—he's struggling. Not just physically, but mentally.
He doesn't know if he can do this. Moving past the echoes of his memories is difficult, and he especially doesn't want to try this with Atem potentially risking his own safety if it's going to be like this.]
I... I don't want you to get hurt for my sake. It's one thing if I fall, but... if my flying gets you injured, then I...
[His mouth presses into a thin, worried line. He doesn't even want to think about it.]
